CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:

  • BELLA MANNINGHAM: Female. Mid-30’s to early 50’s. English accent. Bella is a cultured woman from a wealthy family. As the play opens, she is in the fifth year of a childless marriage to a man her family deeply disapproves of, a man whom she cares for and strives to satisfy but often struggles to understand. Bella is described, accurately, by one of the other characters (Inspector Rough) as a woman who “has travelled a very long way upon the path of sorrow and doubt and … at present … believes she is going out of her mind.” Auditions for the role of Bella may include readings from pages 21-22, 34-38, 50-55, 68-70, and 105-108.
  • JACK MANNINGHAM: Male. Mid-30’s to mid-50’s. English accent. Sophisticated, articulate and cunning, Jack keeps his own counsel but is reflexively bitter. He’s used his wife’s fortune to acquire a substantial but rather dreary townhouse in London, where he currently resides with Bella and their domestic staff. For reasons that become evident as the story unfolds, Jack bars Bella from visiting the third floor of the residence. And he leaves her – every evening – to secretly pursue sordid interests in other locales. The script has scenes involving intimacies between Jack and Nancy. Auditions may include readings from pages 21-22, 93-96, and 102-105.
  • NANCY: Female. 20 to 35. Cockney accent. A live-in parlor maid. She is young, brash, and unashamed about pursuing salacious gratifications. (As noted above, the script calls for intimacies between Nancy and Jack.) See, pages 6-8, 13, 19-20, & 57-66.
  • ELIZABETH: Female. 40 to 60. English accent. The Head Housekeeper. She deeply cares for Bella and is appalled by what’s unfolding around her. See, pp. 27-28, 81-90.
  • INSPECTOR ROUGH: Male. Late 40’s to 70’s. English accent. He formerly served as the lead detective on an unsolved murder that took place fifteen years earlier in what is now the Manningham’s residence. He remains committed to uncovering the truth. Auditions may include readings from pages 28-31, 41-45, 50-55, and 101-103.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Murder and mystery loom in the air in Patrick Hamilton’s classic Victorian thriller, "ANGEL STREET."

Mysterious things have been happening in the Manningham household:

Items go missing, their dog is injured, and Mrs. Manningham hears footsteps coming from the locked, uninhabited top floor.

She fears that she is going mad–that is certainly what Mr. Manningham believes!

ABOUT BARNSTABLE COMEDY CLUB

For many years our name alone has confused and surprised many.  Let us assure you that we are NOT a "comedy club" in the sense that we are a stand-up club or a venue for similar performances.  We are a community theater with a big emphasis on the word "community"!  Generally we produce four main shows per season, which include a musical and three plays beginning in November through May as well as other special events such as the Annual Barnstable Village Stroll, staged readings, and acting and directing workshops. As the oldest running, live  community theater on Cape Cod and one of the oldest in America, we strive to bring excellence to all of our patrons, volunteers, members and to the community. We are a MA 501(3)(c) nonprofit volunteer driven organization.  Dedicated volunteers work in all areas of the theater from front of the house to performers to production to our Board of Directors.
