METRMAG Spotlight On: "Nobody Cares" - Created by and starring Laura Benanti - Huntington Theatre Company (Boston, MA.)

(Note: The following is for an event that has already passed - but for future dates, please click on the associated links)

For a fabulous fun night out, audiences should run (not walk) to see LAURA BENANTI's fabulous one-woman (plus three-musician) show "LAURA BENANTI: NOBODY CARES."

Although the show wrapped up a far-too-brief limited engagement here in Boston, fortunately the show is on tour and fans of BENANTI can visit her website for future dates.

Direct from an acclaimed run at Edinburgh Fringe and two sold-out Off-Broadway engagements "LAURA BENANTI: NOBODY CARES" intersperses music and comedy with quite (un)relatable and hilarious personal experiences.

From the mind of Tony Award® winner BENANTI, with songs co-written with Todd Almond, "LAURA BENANTI: NOBODY CARES" brings us back to her humble beginnings as a mediocre athlete blossoming into a true Broadway icon.

The press release for this show does not stretch the facts as it states: “Known for her dazzling Broadway performances and razor-sharp wit, BENANTI takes the stage to share her hilarious, heartfelt, and sometimes brutally honest takes on motherhood, people-pleasing, and the joys of aging.”

At the October 23rd performance in Boston, at the outset BENANTI announced the show's running time was exactly 62 minutes - which sounded short and ultimately felt all the much shorter when you are enjoying yourself so much that you find yourself wishing the show could go on at least for another 10-20 minutes.

There aren't any greatest hits or medleys by BENANTI, so for those expecting them they might walk away disappointed - but there is enough fun original material here that such omissions should be (and are) quickly forgiven.

Each of the original songs for this onslaught of melodic humor, as written by BENANTI and co-conspirator Todd Almond, help tell her very personal story that has a wit and wisdom that only comes with time and experience.

And the experiences shared by BENANTI are conveyed not to merely reflect on her life's journey thus far, but to recall (and occasionally vent over) some notable milestones in any person's - but especially in a woman's - life.

Incorporating multiple monologues recalling some truly embarrassing moments while growing up, performing, dating, performing, marrying, performing, child birth, performing - and I mean we're talking humiliating, cringe-worthy, toe-curling moments - BENANTI delivers a seemingly honest - and utterly hilarious - verbal scrapbook of memories.

The relationship shared between BENANTI and her bandmates on stage, particularly with co-writer and keyboardist Almond, comes across as that of complete genuine admiration.

Blending side-splitting storytelling with original songs, New York Times Critic's Pick "LAURA BENANTI: NOBODY CARES" is a love letter to recovering people pleasers, mothers, and anybody working on themselves.
